Ways of Being: conversations about poems

A course at the Quaker Meeting House in Burford –

The Friends Meeting House, Pytt’s Lane, Burford OX18 4SJ

The course consists of four sessions over four weeks –

Thursday 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th October 2022, 10.30am–12.15pm.

The course costs £70 and you will receive handouts for each session.

In this course we will read and discuss the work of a number of poets, including Louis MacNeice, Kathleen Jamie and Alice Oswald. Each week we

will look at a group of poems that are linked in some way – thematically perhaps, by authorship, or in the way they approach their subject. As

we read we will consider such things as language, sound, voice, imagery, lineation, meaning and difficulty, the relationship between form

and content.

We will also touch on broader issues relating to poetry, thinking about whether it is possible to arrive at a definition of poetry and why poetry

might matter in today’s world. We will discover how poems can be transformative and may change our experience of being.
